Acquiring Armenian citizenship
Any person 18 years or older can apply for Armenian citizenship. Terms of acquiring Armenian citizenship are settled upon the Law of the Republic of Armenia on “Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia” and Governmental Decision N 1390-N (23 November, 2007). General requirements are: legal residence in Armenia for the last 3 years, good knowledge of Armenian, and acquaintance with the Constitution of Armenia. The procedure of acquiring Armenian citizenship is simplified for ethnic Armenians, for spouses of Armenian citizens, for children of former Armenian citizens (must apply within 3 years after reaching adulthood – 18 years) and for persons who have terminated Armenian citizenship after the year of 1995. In these cases, the requirements of legal residence and knowledge of the Armenian language do not apply. Armenian citizenship can be awarded without any requirement to persons who have provided exceptional service to the Republic of Armenia. Citizenship of Armenia is granted upon a decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia.
Termination of RA citizenship
Every citizen of the Republic of Armenia who has reached the age of 18 has the right to change citizenship - to renounce the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia and acquire citizenship of another state. A citizen’s application for renunciation of citizenship of the Republic of Armenia is rejected if: 1) criminal prosecution has been initiated against him; 2) there is a final and enforceable court verdict or decision against him; 3) his renunciation of citizenship of the Republic of Armenia contradicts the interests of the national security of the Republic of Armenia; 4) he has failed to fulfil obligations related to the interests of the state, enterprises, organizations or citizens. 5) he does not have citizenship of another state and, before signing the Decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia on the termination of citizenship of the Republic of Armenia, does not submit a written certificate (certificate) issued by the competent authority of a foreign state about the legal possibility of acquiring citizenship of that state. Armenian citizenship is terminated by decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia.
Temporary, permanent, special residence in Armenia
Who can apply for temporary residence status Temporary residence status is granted to every foreign citizen if he substantiates the existence of circumstances of his stay on the territory of the Republic of Armenia for a period of one year or more. Such circumstances may be: - studies, - having a work permit, - presence of a spouse or close relative (parent, child, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, grandson) - a citizen or foreign citizen who has a permanent or special residence status in the Republic of Armenia, - engaging in entrepreneurial activity in the Republic of Armenia, - be of Armenian nationality, - other cases established by law. Temporary residence status is granted for a period of up to one year with the possibility of extension for one year each time. An application to extend temporary residence status must be submitted at least 30 days before the expiration of the status. Condition for applying for permanent residence status Permanent residence status is issued to a foreign citizen if he: - proves the presence in the Republic of Armenia of a spouse or close relatives (parent, child, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, grandson), who are citizens of the Republic of Armenia or have special residence status, in the Republic of Armenia, are provided with housing and means of subsistence, and, up to filing an application to acquire permanent residence status, has resided in the Republic of Armenia for at least three years in the manner prescribed by law, or - engaging in entrepreneurial activity in the Republic of Armenia, - be an Armenian by nationality. Permanent residence status is granted for a period of five years, with the possibility of renewal each time for the same period. An application to renew your permanent residence status must be submitted at least 30 days before your permanent residence card expires. Required documents: 1) Application, 2) Three color photographs measuring 35 x 45 mm, 3) Passport, a copy of the passport and a notarized translation of the passport into Armenian, 4) Documents confirming the circumstances for obtaining residence status (extension of residence status) in the Republic of Armenia, 5) Certificate of health, 6) Receipt for payment of state duty. Special residence status The RA Law “On the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens” adopted in 1994 and subsequently the RA Law “On Foreign Citizens” made it possible for foreign citizens to receive a special status of stay in the RA. Special residence status is granted by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia to foreigners of Armenian origin, as well as to other foreign persons engaged in economic or cultural activities. The status is granted for a ten-year period. Persons who are granted a special status of stay are issued a special RA passport, which allows free entry into the territory of the RA and residence without an entry visa. Foreigners who have the Special Status of Residence of the Republic of Armenia have equal rights and obligations with citizens of the Republic of Armenia, with the exception of the right to participate in elections and the right to own land. They are not subject to the obligation to serve in the RA Armed Forces.
